Description of the study program

Education at the Doctoral School in the Social Sciences of the Jagiellonian University in Kraków in the discipline of Economics and finances is based on a flexible construction of the choice of various forms of academic activity that lead to the education of specific knowledge and skills defined in the Education Program. They prepare a graduate of the School for scientific work.

The Education Program consists of

A PhD Program of ECONOMICS and FINANCE discipline and Individual Research Plan. It is a 4-year plan of goals and tasks leading to the submission of a PhD dissertation. A participant in the discipline of ECONOMICS and FINANCE can cooperate - as a team member - with the following Research Teams of the Jagiellonian University: Economics and Innovation, Mathematical Economics, Institutional Economy and Economic Policy, Socio-Economic Analysis and Globalization and Economic Integration.   

It allows participating directly in research programs conducted by the employees of the Institute of Economics, Finance and Management, constituting the staffing resources of the ECONOMICS and FINANCE discipline.

Currently, the main directions of research are determinants of regional development; advanced mathematical methods in studying the dynamics of macroeconomic processes; social, financial and ecological balance - inequalities, intergenerational transfers; sources of future innovation; institutional structures for innovation, education for innovation; analysis of the consequences of technology development and application ( technology assessment); directions of financial market evolution; intergenerational equity of access to environmental resources; labour market.

 

The PhD program of ECONOMICS and FINANCE discipline includes four main learning modules:

(1) specialised training (economic theory),

(2) methodological training (quantitative methods in the study of economic processes),

(3) academic competence (designing and conducting research, dissemination of research results),

(4) preparation for academic work at the university.

Graduate profile

A graduate of the Doctoral School in the discipline of ECONOMICS and FINANCE is prepared to conduct independent scientific research. He can edit the text of the project application and prepare his cost estimate. He can develop a structure and edit the text of a scientific article and argue with reviewers. He can present the results of his research during a public meeting with the nature of an international scientific conference. The graduate is prepared to be employed at a research and teaching position at every academic centre in Poland and abroad.

Description of the study program

The PhD program of socio-economic geography and spatial management is aimed at people planning an academic career as well as those who treat their PhD thesis as an opportunity for personal development and an element supporting their professional career. The program is in a full-time mode and lasts eight semesters.

Qualified lecturers teach classes. The PhD student cooperates with the supervisor from the beginning of the studies based on the Master-Student relationship.

The PhD student can confirm the acquisition of the assumed learning outcomes as part of the classes proposed by the Doctoral School in the Social Sciences included in the education modules, as well as a result of his activities outside the classroom. Classes are conducted as part of the following modules:

Module 1. Specialised education - selected areas of scientific achievements

Module 2. Methodological education - methodology of social research

Module 3. Academic competencies - determinants of the development of a scientific career

Module 4. Professional and soft skills - including preparation for academic work.

In addition to participating in the classes, PhD students must conduct scientific work and carry out academic classes at the University in a dimension consistent with the plan and program of study.

Graduates of the doctoral school, after an affirmative public defence of the PhD dissertation, are awarded the degree of PhD of social sciences in the discipline of socio-economic geography and spatial management.

Graduate profile

A graduate:

knows the field of natural and socio-economic sciences, the ability to use techniques and methods for collecting, analysing and interpreting spatial data using statistical programs and geographical information systems,

demonstrates the mastery of the research workshop, is prepared to carry out scientific work, can formulate and solve research problems,

is prepared to work in higher education institutions, scientific and research units, local and regional authorities, state administration units as well as economic entities involved in spatial planning and regional development.

Description of the study program

The PhD program in the discipline of social communication and media sciences is a modern education that gives a PhD student flexibility in subjects and works on the preparation of the dissertation. That is a proposal for people interested in new and traditional media in Poland and the world, transceiver practices, information management, political communication, international communication, the phenomenon of mediatization, visual communication, popular culture, social communication, journalistic, literary genetics and bibliology.

The wide range of subjects available in the education program guarantees the participant theoretical and research preparation in a selected area of ​​social communication and media sciences. Besides, thanks to a rich offer of courses improving the scientific and didactic workshop, the PhD student will acquire skills allowing him to create his career both as a researcher and as an academic teacher.

A graduate of the education program in the discipline of social communication and media is a person with a PhD degree in social sciences, who independently prepared and defended a work based on the original solution to the scientific problem. He efficiently moves in theoretical issues characteristic of the discipline, has extensive knowledge of research methodology in social sciences and has a developed research workshop. He successfully finds himself both in individual research work and in working in teams, including international ones. He can manage the development of his career. Description of the study program

The education of PhD students at the Doctoral School in the Social Sciences within the discipline of science on politics and administration takes place based on the education program and an individual research plan prepared and implemented under the applicable School Regulations. The education program lasts four years and includes required and optional courses.

 

The program in the discipline of politics and administration consists of four modules of specialist education, divided into subsequent semesters. The first module consists of subjects of educational character from selected areas of the discipline, including the doctoral seminar. As part of the second module, methodological training will be conducted, the purpose of which is to provide knowledge in the field of social research methodology and research tools in the discipline. The third module is aimed at raising academic competences by PhD students and includes classes related to the development of a scientific career and gaining practical skills in this field. The fourth module contains courses for PhD students in the field of vocational preparation for conducting academic classes, as well as soft competencies, necessary in various forms of the professional career of graduates of the Doctoral School in the Social Sciences.

Subjects in the field of education are associated with scientific research offered in the unit, within the field of social sciences and concern the issues of political science, administration, international relations as well as security. Research is conducted as part of individual employee projects, as well as teamwork organised in individual units. Current research concerns the study of the state and the theory of politics, philosophy and ethics of politics, political doctrines, aspects of journalism, history and the contemporary dimension of political thought both in Polish and international terms. Another block of research in the discipline of politics and administration include projects on the issues of constitutionalism and state regimes, socio-political transformations as well as contemporary political systems. An essential part of the conducted research, considering the historical aspects of political, international and security processes, concerns the history of Poland, the history of the political system and the history of diplomacy and international relations. A separate block is research on area studies, which relates to specific regions and subregions around the world. Another direction of research is the issue of foreign policy and contemporary international relations, including elements of strategy and tactics of international relations as well as integration processes in the modern world. Another block of research is issues related to national and international security, including issues of defence, wars, military and armed conflicts as well as global and asymmetric threats in the modern world.

In this respect, the distinction and the different content of research results related to academic classes should be emphasised, reflecting the program within the Doctoral School in the Social Sciences and learning outcomes consistent with the second level characteristics for qualifications at level 8 of the Polish Qualification Framework.

The PhD program in the discipline of politics and administration was created to prepare PhD students for comprehensive social roles and careers. The program is based on academic classes and an individual PhD student's research plan, which is the basis for conducting research and obtaining a PhD degree. Classes as part of the PhD program in the discipline of political science and administration were divided into obligatory and optional subjects.

Compulsory classes concern issues that are fundamental for scientific research conducted in the discipline. In turn, elective courses of the program participants can choose from the offer of the entire Doctoral School, in accordance with their interests and profile of research. Thanks to the adopted solution, after obtaining a PhD degree, graduates of the Doctoral School in the Social Sciences, are prepared for various forms of continuing their professional career.

 

Graduates of the PhD program in the discipline of politics and administration are prepared to continue their academic work and employment at universities and research institutions. Graduates are also prepared to work in government and local government administration, political parties, economic and social organisations, international institutions and organisations, as well as in the media. The participants of the Doctoral School are also prepared to take up the job as an analyst, adviser, specialist and a person who manages teamwork. Graduates also have the competence to undertake social activities, as well as political and parliamentary, related to the socio-political needs of the state.

Description of the program

The doctoral school prepares to obtain a PhD degree in the field of social sciences in the discipline of Management and quality sciences. Education covers theoretical and scientific-didactic foundations of the discipline, the methodology of social sciences and optional and specialist subjects. That expands the knowledge, competencies and skills, allowing to write a PhD dissertation in management and quality sciences, participate in international scientific exchange (such as to participate in scientific conferences, international research teams, prepare own scientific projects and publish articles in JCR journals). The students of the doctoral school have access to classes conducted by the best specialists in social sciences at the Jagiellonian University as well as guests from other universities. The PhD students can also participate in research teams and scientific projects carried out by scientists representing management and quality sciences.

Graduate profile

A graduate of a doctoral school in the field of social sciences in the discipline of management and quality is awarded a PhD degree in the field of social sciences in the discipline of management and quality. A graduate has well-established and systematic knowledge in the field of study and discipline. He knows the methods of research and has mastered the ability to independently develop the concept of research and organization of research workshop, conducting the research process, and effective transfer of knowledge, communication of research results and analysis, synthesis and evaluation of scientific literature in the field of social sciences with particular emphasis on management and quality. He knows the principles of the functioning of the science financing system in Poland, with emphasis on the possibility of raising funds for research and principles for the implementation of scientific projects. He can also undertake academic tasks at the academic level. By developing a PhD dissertation, which constitutes the original solution to the scientific problem, it contributes to the development and broadening of knowledge in the field of management and quality sciences. He is aware of the social responsibility of the researcher and ethical principles in scientific work.

Description of the program

The PhD program in the field of legal sciences is preparing to obtain a PhD degree in social sciences in the discipline of legal sciences.

The participant of the PhD program in the field of legal sciences realises a modular program offered as part of the Doctoral School in the Social Sciences of the Jagiellonian University, which consists of four modules:

Module 1. Specialist education - selected areas of scientific achievements (legal sciences);

Module 2. Methodological education - methodology of social research;

Module 3. Academic competences - determinants of the development of a scientific career;

Module 4. Professional and soft skills, including preparation for academic work. In addition to those offered under the abovementioned modules of course classes, the PhD student also can confirm the acquisition of the established learning outcomes and as a result of his activities carried out outside the classroom.

 

As part of the module covering specialist training in legal sciences, the participant of the PhD program is obliged to take part in three seminars:

a doctoral seminar (including individual consultations with the supervisor);

a project (under which the participants carry out a joint research project on the established leading topic);

Moreover, the current "Law of the future" (under which the participants present news regarding their specialisation).  Under this module, the program participant also has the option of implementing an individual or team social or educational project according to the plan approved by the program manager.

 

Education within the PhD program in the field of legal sciences lasts four years and is conducted in Polish and English. Under the program, a PhD student is required to obtain at least 40 ECTS points, including at least 25 ECTS points during the first two years preceding the mid-term evaluation. The program specifies in detail the minimum points required to obtain in each of the modules mentioned above.

A graduate of the PhD program in the field of legal sciences has specialist knowledge in the field of social sciences in the field of legal science. He is methodically and technically prepared to conduct independent research, as well as scientific and didactic activity in the legal science discipline. He can cooperate with specialists from other scientific disciplines, lead a research team, apply for funds for research, and understands the social and ethical dimension of his activity.

Description of the study program

The PhD study in the discipline of sociological sciences includes various forms of activities (e.g. E-learning, study visits seminars, lectures) and the implementation of individual research plan under the guidance of the supervisor. The program includes classes in Polish and English, compulsory and optional, including education in the field of:

[1] contemporary concepts and sociological theories, interpretation of social reality and the practical application of sociological knowledge;

[2] research methodology, including advanced methods and techniques of qualitative and quantitative research;

[3] academic competences, including raising funds for research, principles of scientific communication, popularising research results and shaping a professional career;

[4] professional competences, among others preparation for conducting academic classes, transfer and dissemination of knowledge (e.g. in the form of training, workshops, seminars). Throughout the entire period of education, which lasts no more than four years, a PhD student is required to collect at least 40 ECTS, including at least 25 ECTS during the first two years preceding the mid-term evaluation.

A graduate of a doctoral school has advanced knowledge about contemporary concepts, and sociological theories, can interpret social phenomena and apply sociological knowledge in practice. He has methodological competence, independently manages research projects and disseminates their results - based on the highest standards, caring about the organisation, substantive quality and ethical dimension of undertaken activities. He can plan his professional career, has managerial competence, is prepared to conduct academic classes and work in research teams.

Description of the study program

The Program of Education at the Doctoral School in the Social Sciences carried out in the discipline of pedagogy enables to acquire specialist knowledge and skills necessary to conduct research topped with the submission of a doctoral dissertation in the field of pedagogy and preparation to take the role of an academic teacher. It is a new, personalised proposal for the development of a career in science.

The education program includes four modules:

  • specialised module - enabling to acquire in-depth knowledge of the world achievements of the discipline of pedagogy and a range of cognitive skills related to the critical analysis of research results, innovative solving of complex educational problems, expert and research activities;
  • methodological module - related to building a specialised methodological workshop enabling the design and conduct of scientific research, individual and team, also in the international environment;
  • module related to academic competences - enabling to acquire many skills related to the development of scientific careers;
  • module related to professional and soft skills, built on a modern concept of academic didactics, enabling preparation for academic work with students.

As part of individual modules, a PhD Student is offered courses and other activities that can be used to build an Individual Research Plan which allows achieving the learning outcomes provided for the Doctoral School of Social Sciences. Learning outcomes can also be confirmed based on other, alternative types of activities completed by the PhD student, listed in the catalogue presented in the program of the Doctoral School of Social Sciences.

Graduate profile

The Education Program offered at the Doctoral School in the Social Sciences in the discipline of pedagogy enables the graduate to build a workshop based on a broad theoretical background, allowing further independent scientific and research work. The graduate has an in-depth knowledge of the world achievements of pedagogy and its methodological foundations; mastered the research workshop to the extent enabling the creative use of research methods, techniques and tools; knowledge of a modern foreign language enables him to participate in an international scientific environment. The graduate's completion of advanced studies and research makes him a high-class specialist in the area of ​​his choice.

The acquired substantive knowledge and research competencies as well as the scientific contacts and cooperation with researchers at home and abroad undertaken in the course of the educational program give the graduate a strong position also on the non-academic job market.

Module 2. Methodological education - methodology of research specific to psychology as an empirical science (statistical and qualitative methods);

Module 3. Academic competences - determinants of the development of a scientific career;

Module 4. Professional and soft skills, including preparation for academic work. In addition to those offered under the abovementioned course modules, the PhD student also can confirm the acquisition of the assumed learning outcomes as a result of his activities carried out outside the classroom.

Graduate profile

A graduate of Doctoral School in the Social Sciences School is prepared for the scientific work as a future employee of academic institutions, acting as both a researcher and a teacher in higher education. The graduate has a broad range of knowledge about the social and psychological foundations of individual and social behaviour. The graduate of this faculty will also learn theoretically and practically the workshop of scientific work in the field of psychology to the extent that further independent scientific and research work is possible. They will deepen the knowledge of the philosophical and methodological foundations of psychology; they master the applied research tools and techniques; perfect knowledge of a chosen foreign language, acquire necessary didactic competencies.

Description of the study program

Education within the interdisciplinary PhD program " Society of the Future "prepares for obtaining the doctoral degree in the field of social sciences or one of the nine disciplines within this field (1. Economics and finance, 2. Socio-economic geography and spatial management, 3. Social Communication and Media Sciences, 4. Management and Quality Sciences, 5. Psychology, 6. Politics and Administration Sciences, 7. Legal Sciences, 8. Sociological Sciences, 9. Pedagogy).

The program is addressed to people who would like to research within the field of social sciences in an interdisciplinary environment and using interdisciplinary forms of education. In every academic year, the education within the program is organized around another leading topic, which determines the subject of individual research plans, guest lectures and project classes. In the academic year 2019/2020, the leading theme is " Diversity in Society ".

Education within the interdisciplinary PhD program " Society of the Future " lasts four years and takes place in English. As part of the program, a PhD student is required to obtain at least 40 ECTS points.

Graduate profile

A graduate of the " Society of the Future " interdisciplinary PhD program has specialist knowledge in the field of more than one scientific discipline in the field of social sciences. He is methodically and technically prepared for independent, interdisciplinary research and academic activity in selected scientific disciplines within the field of social sciences. He can cooperate with specialists from other scientific disciplines, lead a research team, apply for funds for scientific research and understands the social and ethical dimension of his activity.

Description of the program

The international PhD program in the field of cognitive neuroscience, CogNes, is conducted in English. Its distinguishing feature is a flexible approach to the individual educational needs of PhD students, both through the selection of specialist courses corresponding to their needs, as well as the emphasis on close cooperation between the PhD student and the supervisor. The ordered courses will enable PhD students to acquire practical skills in the field of data analysis, writing scientific texts, developing presentation skills, and to acquire theoretical knowledge on the methodology of science or specific subdisciplines in which the doctoral projects of participants will be implemented.

Classes will be conducted by both Polish and international scientists. In addition to the traditional formula, classes will be implemented in the form of intensive, short-term courses run by foreign experts. The CogNes program assumes the payment of an additional scholarship to all participants in the amount of PLN 1,800 a month and co-financing of conference trips, international internships and publications of scientific articles. 

Graduate profile

A graduate of the CogNes PhD program is a young scientist with knowledge in the field of cognitive neuroscience, in the area covered by the PhD dissertation. He has skills in the field of scientific research, analysis and interpretation as well as their dissemination during scientific conferences as well as in the form of articles in the world renown magazines. A graduate of the program is prepared for undertaking scientific work in research centres and universities in Poland and abroad
