Announcement regarding recruitment for the doctoral program "Society of the Future " (discipline - Legal Sciences) as part of a special competition procedure in the Doctoral School in the Social Sciences of the Jagiellonian University

The director of the Doctoral School in the Social Sciences (hereinafter: SDNS) announces a competition for applications for one place in the doctoral program in the discipline of legal science.

Formal prerequisites for participation in the recruitment procedure

Admission to the doctoral school may be applied for by a person with a master's degree, master's degree in engineering or an equivalent degree obtained in any field of study, and a person referred to in art. 186 paragraph 2 of the Act.

Requirements related to participation in the project

  • completed master studies in law (due to the subject of the grant, preference will be given to those who have defended their master thesis in the theory or philosophy of law, in particular in political philosophy or philosophy of human rights);

  • experience in working with domestic or foreign research grants;

  • very good command of the English language, enabling the presentation of papers and preparation of publications in English;

  • presentation for the recruitment of a representative essay or its fragment (minimum 5 pages) in the field of contemporary political philosophy or philosophy of law;

  • presenting, for the recruitment purposes, a recommendation letter from an independent researcher (with the degree of habilitated doctor or the title of professor) confirming the candidate's / candidate's predispositions for scientific work;

  • participation in the interview, the purpose of which is to check the Candidate's / Candidate's knowledge of the subject matter of the project and to verify the methodological preparation for starting scientific work; the basis for the interview will be the achievements of the Candidate / Candidate and a presentation containing a plan to develop one of the points of the research plan (one of the allegations made against immunological passports described in the project);

  • interest in science, independence, ability to work in a team, creativity.

  • The Candidate / Candidate at the time of joining the recruitment procedure may not have a doctoral degree and may not be a participant in a doctoral school or doctoral studies;

  • readiness for foreign internships and study visits. The Candidate / Candidate, when entering the competition, must be aware that, in accordance with the assumptions of the Preludium Bis 3 grant, they will be obliged / required to complete a 3 to 6-month foreign research internship financed under a separate competition by the National Agency for Academic Exchange (NAWA) and three several-day study visits to research centers indicated by the project manager.

Notification of candidates about the date of the interviews: September 19, 2022

Assessment criteria

Pursuant to the Annex to the NCN Council Resolution No. 90/2019 of September 12, 2019 on the amendment to the Regulations on awarding funds for the implementation of tasks financed by the National Science Center in the field of research projects, the candidate's qualification result is determined on the basis of for the presented achievements and recommendations and the result of the interview. The final grade consists of:

  1. Comprehensive assessment of the competencies to be implemented in the realization of specific tasks in a research project, including the interview process (70% of the final grade):
    3 points - very good (corresponding to 46-70 IRK recruitment points),

2 points - good (26-46 recruitment points IRK),

1 point - weak (1-25 recruitment IRK points),

0 points - lack of competence.

  1. Overall assessment candidate's academic achievements (30% of the final grade):
    4 points - outstanding (corresponding to 23-30 IRK recruitment points),

3 points - very good (15-22 IRK recruitment points),

2 points - good (answers 7-14 IRK recruitment points),

1 point - poor (answers 1 - 6 IRK recruitment points),

0 points - lack of scientific achievements.

 

Persons who did not attend the interview receive a qualification score of 0 (zero) points on the final ranking list. 

The general evaluation criteria adopted in the doctoral school are used to evaluate the scientific achievements. 

 

The candidate's qualification score is the sum of the recruitment points  obtained in each category and is a number in the range from 0 to 100, corresponding to the scale of points defined in the regulations of the NCN competition, given to two decimal places. Candidates are placed on the ranking list in order of their qualification result.

 

Description of tasks

Scholarship holder will work as part of the project "Legal and moral admissibility of immunological passports" led by Dr. hab. Wojciech Ciszewski ( Faculty of Law and Administration of the Jagiellonian University).

As part of the doctoral dissertation being prepared, the PhD student-scholarship holder will be required to perform the following tasks as part of the research plan:

  1. Determining the scope of application of immunological passports in legal and political practice.

  2. Analysis of the moral allegations made against the regulations introducing immunological passports.

  3. Analysis of legal allegations made against regulations introducing immunological passports.

  4. Determining the acceptable scope of the policy based on the use of immunological passports.

  5. Summary of applications regarding the permissible scope of application of immunological passports with the arrangements relating to the practice of countries in this area.

As part of the grant, the PhD student is also required to complete a research internship at a foreign research center. Funds awarded under the grant enable, inter alia, participation in domestic and foreign scientific conferences, purchase of specialist literature, proofreading of prepared articles, consultations with foreign specialists, as well as publication of the results of the research project.

Doctoral student-scholarship holder is obliged to implement the doctoral program as part of the interdisciplinary doctoral program " Society of the Future " (discipline of Legal Sciences) . The doctoral student will also be required, inter alia, to:

  • correct and timely implementation of research tasks resulting from the research plan, cost estimate of the implemented Project and the Agreement, in agreement with the project manager, and submitting reports on the work performed to the project manager;

  • implementation of an individual research plan in agreement with the Project manager;

  • apply for financing a foreign internship, lasting from 3 to 6 months in a foreign research center selected by the project manager, in a competition conducted by the National Agency for Academic Exchange (NAWA) and implement this internship during the Project;

  • provide the Jagiellonian University and the financing institution, as well as entities authorized by the financing institution with information on the state of research implementation;

  • implementation, during the performance of tasks under the Project, of the education program at the Doctoral School, completed with the PhD student obtaining the doctoral degree no later than 12 months after the completion of the Project;

  • ensuring access to the full content of the publication, which is the result of the research project implementation.

Conditions of employment

Place of the scholarship: Kraków, Doctoral School in the Social Sciences and the Faculty of Law and Administration of the Jagiellonian University. Education will take place on a full-time basis, and participation in the project will require the PhD student's personal presence in Krakow.

Scholarship: The doctoral student will receive a doctoral scholarship entirely from the funds of the National Science Center, i.e. from the budget provided for in the Project for the doctoral student's remuneration of PLN 5,000 / month (gross, up to the month in which the mid-term evaluation of the doctoral student at the doctoral school was conducted) and 6,000 PLN (gross, after the month in which the mid-term evaluation of a doctoral student at a doctoral school was conducted), pursuant to the Act of July 20, 2018, Law on Higher Education and Science (Journal of Laws of 2018, item 1668, as amended), and on the basis of the Regulations on awarding funds for the implementation of tasks financed by the National Science Center in the field of research projects, constituting an appendix to the resolution of the Council of the National Science Center No. 49/2020 of April 29, 2020 on amending the Regulations on awarding funds for the implementation of tasks financed by the National Science Center in the field of research projects. The doctoral scholarship will be paid after all components are deducted, in accordance with applicable regulations. In particular, the funds allocated to the doctoral scholarship will cover the costs of compulsory social security contributions and - at the request of the Candidate / Candidate - the costs of sickness insurance. The scholarship will be paid for 48 months starting in October 2022.

During the project implementation, the PhD student may not receive any other scholarship or remuneration financed from the funds granted under direct costs from other research projects funded under NCN calls.

 

Documents required for entry

The entry consists in delivering the following documents to the School in the manner indicated in the announcement:

·       an application for admission generated from the system, containing a photo, along with other documents downloaded from the system under the link "Documents and further steps" in the recruitment application table,

o   a copy of the graduation diploma entitling to undertake education, with the original available for inspection,

o   for inspection: original documents uploaded to the system at the stage of submitting the declaration.

When enrolling in studies, the candidate must present an identity card: ID card or passport.

A candidate applying for admission to the School pursuant to Art. 186 paragraph 2 (on the basis of an opinion on the high quality of research work carried out or a certificate of being a beneficiary of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education Program "Diamond Grant"), as a diploma entitling to undertake education, it presents a first-cycle diploma or a certificate of completion of the third year of uniform master's studies.

A higher education diploma obtained outside Poland must have an apostille or be legalized.
