Despite the existence of sophisticated international legal instruments and institutions aimed at human rights protection and particularly at prevention and punishing atrocity crimes (genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity), we still witness the most serious human rights violations in different parts of the world, including the current dramatic example of Ukraine. Is it possible to find more effective ways to stop such violations? How to achieve this goal? These challenging dilemmas will be addressed by prominent human rights protection practitioners in a panel discussion followed by a Q&A session.

Our guests are:

Dr Vincent A. De Gaetano, former Judge and Section President at the European Court of Human Rights; Chief Justice Emeritus, Malta

Professor Krzysztof Wojtyczek, Judge at the European Court of Human Rights

Professor Michał Balcerzak, Member and Vice-President of the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination; Judge ad hoc at the European Court of Human Rights

Professor Roman Kwiecień, Head of the Scientific Board of the JU Centre for Human Rights; Member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration and Arbitrator at the Court of Conciliation and Arbitration within the OSCE

Moderation: Professor Michał Kowalski, Head of the JU Centre for Human Rights; Judge ad hoc at the European Court of Human Rights
